Why is Gun Violence an Issue?
In case you didn’t know, a gunman opened fire on a Republican congressional baseball team today, wounding Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and at least three other people. House Majority Whip Scalise is in critical condition and undergoing surgery. The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, died from his injuries. Here in SF, 4 people, including the gunman, were killed and several others were wounded at a UPS facility. The suspect is allegedly a disgruntled employee, but the story is still developing. Gun violence is getting worse and worse.
Why This Matters:
Gun violence is one of the highest impact issues facing American society today: the total number of gun-related incidents in 2017 to date include 153 mass shootings, 300 children killed or injured, and 6,865 deaths.
Although experts consider gun violence a public health epidemic, lobbying from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and gun companies, and a fervent commitment to the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms, has stymied congressional efforts to regulate guns or their sale.
But today’s news makes it clear that sensible gun reform should be a bipartisan issue.
How Your Investments Can Make A Difference
Money talks, and there’s no issue where money is more entrenched than the weapons manufacturing and defense industry. Here at OpenInvest, we believe that we can use finance as instruments of change. By sending a message with our investments, average citizens can work to reduce gun violence even when lobbyists and politicians obstruct progress.
So how do we make sure your investments aren’t funding the weapons industry? First, we work closely with our data partners to identify how much of a company’s revenue comes from the sales of weapons and ammunition. When you select this screen, OpenInvest divests you from all companies who derive more than 5% of their revenue from the sales of weapons or ammunition.
